Clary Sage
Salvia sclarea

This is an established Clary Sage (second year). It's fuzzy leaves become quite large by the end of summer. Seeds soaked in water produce a mucilaginous eye bath which safely removes particles, hence its name ‘clear eye' or ‘clary'. Used as a fixative in potpourris. Handsome aromatic flowers. Full grown, clary reaches 3' in height by August. Picture above taken 05/12/99.

This picture was taken in late June before the flower stems were fully open. Leaves are actually quite pungent, but the drying flowers have an enticing aroma. Annie of the Fine Fettle says they are prized among aromatherapists for invoking Joy to a roomful of people.
