Theme "My Life is in Your Hands"
I would never think I would be standing here,
Waiting and waiting, I shed a tear,
The jury's decision,
Will affect peoples' opinion,
On the many lives that I have ruined.
As I think of that night,
I couldn't believe my sight,
All my friends were drinking,
So I felt like shrinking,
I was the designated driver.
The party was coming to dead ends,
I decided to wait for my best-friends,
I stand there looking at a shooting star,
Then I see them pile into my car,
We drove off down the highway.
There was this very steep turn,
My friends saw it and felt stem,
Right then I could not steer,
But why? I only had three beer,
We all flew off the road.
I blanked out,
I could hear the police shout,
"It's gonna burn, It's gonna burn!"
Wow, did I ever learn!
I climbed out of the buring overturned car.
The fire-fighters could not pull out,
My other friends without a doubt,
They are dead,
All because of my dumb head,
Why did I have to drink?
So this has brought me to the trial,
I am already in denial,
The jury comes out and gives my life in prison,
Killing four people, my time has risen,
All my friends are dead because of me.
Their lives were in my hands,
Please don't end up like this,
Don't drink and drive!

MADD Canada 1998 National Writing Contest
3rd Place Winner - Derek Carter, Grade 4
Theme – “Don’t Drink and Drive”
I’ve
had my own personal experience with drinking and driving but not as
traumatic as some families. Almost a year ago I was visiting a
neighbour across the road from my house. My little dog Rosie was
sitting at the edge of the road when a man in a car swerved off the
road and hit her. This man didn’t get stopped until the corner. He
staggered back and said, “Sorry man, I didn’t see it.” He didn’t even
know if he hit an animal or a person. If it had been a few minutes
later it would have been me heading home with my dog. When he finally
realized how badly hurt the dog was and how upset we were, he staggered
back to his car and drove away. In one careless minute this drunk
driver broke my dog’s back and we had to put her down. It took an
important part of my family away from us forever.
